In this inaugural blog, we’re focusing on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), its impact, and how Multifly is making a difference through adaptive clothing and collaborations with organizations like IBD India.

 

What is IBD?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic condition with two major subtypes - Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, that cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. While the exact cause is unknown, factors like genetics, an abnormal immune response, and environmental triggers play a role.

While the prevalence of IBD in India remains lower than in Western countries, the sheer size of the population results in a substantial number of affected individuals. In 2010, it was estimated that approximately 1.4 million people (Kedia S, 30018961, & PMC5988149., n.d.) in India were living with IBD, making it the country with the second-highest number of cases globally, after the USA.

Common symptoms of IBD include:

• Persistent diarrhoea

• Abdominal pain and cramping

• Fatigue

• Unintended weight loss

• Blood in stool

IBD is a life-altering condition, but with proper management and support, individuals can lead fulfilling lives.
